Are Sex Toys Safe?
Considering sex toys are inserted inside our bodies, or onto our genitals, it’s natural to consider what materials they might be made from and how safe they are to use. Whilst sex toys like vibrators and dildos let users know about the materials, cleaning and how body-safe they might be, there is not as much information about male sex toy sleeves and strokers.
In fact, many people have misconceptions about the material that strokers and sleeves use to reciprocate soft flesh-like texture. The material used is thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) or thermoplastic rubber (TPR). The difference between TPE and TPR is minor, and essentially we can treat them as the same material.
There is a misunderstanding that because these materials are porous at a microscopic level, that they can cause bacteria to get trapped inside of pores and cause damage to your penis. This is not true, bacteria will only grow inside of your toy if you do not clean or dry your toy properly. There are thousands of men that have been using strokers for decades, with no issue at all. The issue truly comes down to the proper knowledge of taking care of your stroker.

Phthalates in sex toys
TPE/TPR is a completely safe material, even used in the medical industry. The main issue – outside of improper maintenance – is buying impure TPE/TPR. The purity of the material needs to be very high, otherwise phthalates (a family of chemical rubber softeners used in many sex toys) can be present within the material and these are unsafe for intimate contact.
This is why I suggest that people buy from reputable companies that have a high standard of quality. When TPE/TPR is made at an extremely high level of purity, phthalates are not present within the material. So as long as you aren’t buying a product made by a questionable maker, you will be fine. Sex toys are completely safe, as long as they are made to a high standard.
What happens if you improperly clean your sex toys?
There are many things that can happen if you improperly clean your toys. The main problem that is consistent with most issues people will have with their toys, revolves around bacterial growth. Bacterial growth is caused by, you guessed it, bacteria being left within the toy and being given the conditions allowed to thrive. Mostly, leaving the toy both dirty and wet is probably the ideal condition for bacteria to populate in. This can lead to mold, urinary tract infections, and a bunch of other gross and painful situations.

Step-by-Step Guide on How to Clean Your Sex Toy
What you will need:
- Clean Microfiber Cloth
- Toy Cleaner
- Sink, Shower, or Bath
- Drying Area
Step 1
Firstly, use your toy, and have an excellent time doing so. After this, what we will be dealing with will be a few different elements. Firstly, we have lube. Make sure whenever you use any toy that uses high quality TPE or TPR (which is the material Kiiroo uses for their strokers), that you only use water based lubricants. Oil based lubricants can seriously shorten the lifespan of your toy, or just make it dangerous by breaking down the TPE or TPR on a molecular level.
The other main thing that we will be cleaning out is going to be semen, and sperm. Did you know semen and sperm are two different things? Semen is the fluid that serves as the transportation method for the sperm. Basically, the only thing that matters for our purposes is the fact that both of these are organic, and we need to use some sort of sanitizing solution in order to get rid of it. If we skip sanitization, we could have bacteria build up which could cause a wide variety of problems. Lastly, there will probably be either hair or lint, but objectively they do not pose any challenges to cleaning.

Step 2
After your toy has been used, you will want to take it to a source of running water, preferably through a spout of some kind. The most common places are the shower, bath, or sink. You want to remove the sleeve from the case, take both caps off, and clean every part individually. With the caps and the case, you will want to get the inside and outside rinsed off. Make sure to clear any semen, lube, or whatever out. With the sleeve, do the same. Be careful to check the inside of the sleeve to confirm that you have flushed it completely of debris.
When flushing out semen, you will want to use cold water. This will be faster for rinsing your sleeve of the material, but only marginally. The main idea behind this is that hot water will coagulate the proteins in the organic material that semen is composed of. So if that happens, it will not want to flush out as easily. So cold water is going to be optimal, but being someone that has rinsed toys out with both hot and cold water, you will not notice a huge difference. If your hands are cold and the cold water hurts to clean your toy with, go ahead and use warm or hot water. Just ensure that the water isn’t too hot, as that could damage your toy, but that would be near boiling temperatures.
Step 3
This step is arguably the most important: sterilization. You will need to have some sort of toy cleaner spray. I would suggest that you buy this spray from a reputable company such as Kiiroo, because you really want the cleaner to work properly. Take the sleeve, the case, and both end caps and spray the inside and outside of all of these with the toy cleaner. There is going to be a sweet spot when it comes to how far away you will want to shoot the toy from. The area of effect that the toy cleaner’s cone shaped spray will hit, will be smaller the closer you shoot, and bigger the farther away it is. Think of it like a spotlight. If you have it too far away from the toy, it will not apply enough solution, or just miss too much of the toy. I personally have found about 4-6 inches away is optimal for my cleaning routine.
After spraying all of the inside and outside of the toy, case, and end caps, you will need to wait 30 seconds for the solution to activate and kill the bacteria.
Step 4
After sanitation, you will want to rinse off everything again. Just give everything, inside and out, a good cleaning. If you want to be extra professional about it, while the toys are in the 30 second wait period for sterilization, wash your hands. Afterwards, rinse out everything, inside and out.
Step 5
For the last step, you will want to have a clean place that you would not mind having your toy sit for a long while. Ideally, this place will have a decent airflow, to allow for air drying to be faster. Secondly, you will want this place to be clean. Because, I mean, you just cleaned your toy, why would you want to dirty it up just by laying it down in a dirty area?
Use your microfiber cloth, and pat down the outside and inside of the case, sleeve, and end caps. Then, air dry all of these parts until the outside of the sleeve is relatively dry, and the inside of the case is relatively dry. Usually the microfiber cloth will get you to that point. Afterwards, put the sleeve back into the case, but leave both of the caps off of the case. Put the sleeve in the case in an upright position, standing it up so that the front end of the toy is facing to the sky, and the bottom end is sitting down on the drying area you have designated. Leave it like that, and let it air dry. The reason for this, is that you want gravity to pull down any moisture while you are letting it air dry. This will speed up the process.
How long the drying will take, will depend on your climate’s humidity or dryness. The internal design of your toy could also increase or decrease the longevity of the drying time. Keep in mind that the bottom end of your toy will be smaller than the top of it, so it can topple over relatively easily. You could solve this in a number of ways, such as resting it against something and giving it another balance point. Just ensure that whatever you do is not going to dirty your toy again.

FAQ
Q: What’s the best way to clean sex toys?
A: Proper sex toy hygiene is essential for a safe and enjoyable experience. The cleaning method depends on the material. Non-porous toys like silicone and glass can be easily cleaned with mild soap and warm water. However, porous materials require extra care. A thorough wash with soap and water is crucial, and consider using condoms for added protection. Remember, regular cleaning prevents bacterial growth and keeps your toys in optimal condition. Trust me, your body (and your toys) will thank you.
Q: Can I use regular soap to clean my sex toys?
A: Let’s talk soap! It’s totally fine to use mild soap on your sex toys. Think gentle, unscented options. Avoid those harsh cleaning products – they’re not doing your toys (or you) any favors. If you want to be extra cautious, there are sex toy cleaners specifically designed for the job. Just make sure to rinse, rinse, rinse!
Q: How do I clean and store my vibrator?
A: Want to keep your vibrator happy? Check if it’s water resistant. If it is, give it a sudsy bath with mild soap and warm water. If not, a gentle wipe down will do the trick. Make sure it’s totally dry before putting it away. A soft pouch or container is a great home for your vibrator when it’s not in use.
Q: Are there any sex toys that can’t be cleaned with soap and water?
A: Not all sex toys are equal when it comes to cleaning. Your electronic sex buddies probably don’t want a swim, so stick to a damp cloth and gentle soap. And those squishy, porous toys? They can be a bit of a pain to clean thoroughly. A specialized cleaner or even condoms can be your saving grace.
Q: How often should I clean my sex toys?
A: You should clean your sex toys after every use. This helps prevent the buildup of bacteria, reduces the risk of infections like bacterial vaginosis, and maintains the quality of your toys. It’s especially important to clean and disinfect toys if you’re sharing them with partners or using them for both anal and vaginal play.
Q: Can I put my sex toys in the dishwasher to clean them?
A: Don’t be fooled by the convenience of the dishwasher for your sex toys. Those high temperatures and harsh detergents can be a total buzzkill for your toys. And let’s be real, sharing that space with your dinner dishes is a bit gross. Keep things simple and wash your toys by hand with mild soap. Your toys (and your sanity) will thank you.
Q: What’s the proper way to clean anal toys?
A: Cleaning anal toys properly is essential for safety and hygiene. I’ve learned to always use warm water and mild soap, scrubbing every surface meticulously. For toys with intricate designs, I take extra care to clean all crevices where bacteria might linger. Using condoms on these toys is a tip I picked up early on—it simplifies the cleaning process and adds a layer of protection. Cleaning before and after each use has become a routine for me, ensuring that my toys are always ready for safe enjoyment. This careful approach has helped me avoid any unpleasant surprises and maintain a healthy play environment.
Q: How do I keep my sex toys clean between uses?
A: Keeping your sex toys clean is essential for both hygiene and longevity. Think of them like your favorite kitchen gadget – you wouldn’t use it without washing it first, right? After each use, give your toy a gentle wash with warm water and a toy-safe cleaner. Avoid harsh soaps that can dry out the material. Once clean, let it air dry completely in a cool, dark place. For extra protection, consider using a toy storage bag. Regular inspections are key to catching any wear and tear early. Trust me, a little care now can save you from a world of trouble later!
Q: What’s the best way to clean sex toys?
A: Let’s talk about keeping your toys in tip-top shape! The best way to clean your sex toy depends on what it’s made of. Silicone, glass, and stainless steel toys are usually happy with a warm water and mild soap scrub. But if your toy is a little more sensitive, a specialized cleaner is the way to go. And remember, a quick wash before and after each use is essential for a happy, healthy playtime. So, grab that soap and let’s get cleaning!
Q: Can I use regular soap to clean my sex toys?
A: So, can you use regular soap on your sex toys? Well, it depends. Mild soap and water are usually fine for non-porous toys like silicone or glass. But if your toy is made of something more delicate or has electronic parts, it’s best to stick to a specialized sex toy cleaner. Think of it like using dish soap on your fine china – it might work, but you risk damaging it. So, to keep your toys in top shape, choose the right cleaner for the job.
Q: How do I disinfect my sex toys?
A: To disinfect non-porous toys like silicone or glass, a bleach solution (one part bleach to ten parts water) can be effective. However, be cautious and follow the instructions carefully. For porous toys or those with electronic components, a specialized sex toy cleaner is recommended. Disinfection is particularly important when sharing toys or using them for multiple body openings.
Q: How should I clean and store my sex toys?
A: Proper storage is just as important as cleaning when it comes to caring for your sex toys. After cleaning, thoroughly dry your toy with a soft towel to prevent mold and bacteria growth. Choose a cool, dark place for storage. Individual storage bags can help protect your toys from dust and accidental damage. By following these simple steps, you can extend the life of your favorite playthings.
Q: Are there any sex toys that are difficult to clean?
A: Not all sex toys are created equal when it comes to cleaning. Toys made from materials like jelly rubber or TPE can be tricky to keep really clean because of their porous nature. Bacteria can hide in those tiny nooks and crannies. That’s why I prefer silicone toys – they’re much easier to sanitize. If you love your jelly toy, consider using condoms for extra protection. Your body will thank you!
Q: Can I put my sex toys in the dishwasher to clean them?
A: Dishwasher? For your sex toys? Let’s just say, it’s not the best idea. While some silicone or stainless steel toys might survive a dishwasher cycle, the heat and harsh detergents can be a real party pooper for most toys. They can crack, fade, or even melt! Stick to the basics: warm water, mild soap, and a gentle touch. Your toys will thank you for the spa treatment.
Q: How often should I clean my sex toys?
A: Let’s talk about toy hygiene! To keep your sex toys fresh and fabulous, it’s important to clean them before and after each use. Think of it as a little pampering session for your favorite playthings. Regular cleaning helps prevent bacteria build-up and keeps your toys feeling and looking their best. So, grab that soap and give your toys some love!
Q: What is a sex toy cleaner and why is it important?
A: A sex toy cleaner is basically a special soap for your adult toys. It’s super important because it blasts away all the nasty germs that can hang out on your favorite playthings. Imagine using a regular body wash on your face – it’s not ideal, right? Same goes for your toys. A toy cleaner is designed to be gentle but effective, keeping you and your toys happy and healthy.
Q: Can I clean all sex toys with soap and water?
A: Generally, yes, you can give most sex toys a good scrub with soap and water. But it depends on the material. Silicone, glass, and stainless steel toys are usually chill with a simple wash. However, if your toy is made from something porous like jelly or TPE, you might need to go the extra mile with a special toy cleaner to make sure it’s really clean.
Q: What is the best way to store your sex toys to ensure they remain in good condition?
A: To store your sex toys properly, follow these guidelines:
- Clean Thoroughly: Always clean your toys after each use with mild soap and water or a specialized sex toy cleaner to prevent bacterial growth.
- Dry Completely: Ensure that your toys are completely dry before storing them to avoid mold and mildew.
- Use Storage Bags: Store each toy in its own storage bag or pouch to prevent them from touching each other, which can cause material degradation.
- Avoid Direct Sunlight: Keep your toys in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, which can damage the materials.
- Consider Using Refreshing Powder: For toys made from materials like TPE or TPR, use a refreshing powder to maintain their texture.
