The sex toy market: a billion dollar industry

Whether you own one, know someone who owns one, or want to get one, the sex toy market revolution is impossible to ignore.

From hidden guilty pleasures to proudly displayed ornaments

Dildo’s, vibrators, sleeves, strokers, pumps, rings, and all other toys sold on the sex toy market, used to be taboo. An object of guilty pleasure people hid away from prying eyes, tucked away at the back of a bottom draw for when no one else was around. These days you’re more likely to see one proudly displayed as a bathroom ornament or sitting on a coffee table.

You see, once Sex and the City released that famous episode where Charlotte falls in love with her rabbit the way people began to view sex toys was forever changed.

Sex toys went from being taboo to being things that were cool and trendy to own, seemingly overnight. And we’re not just talking about some clunky plastic object that vaguely resembles a penis.

New generation sex toys: pleasure by default

The new generation of sex toys includes vibrators, dildos, lubes, sleeves, rings, pumps, packers, harnesses, butt plugs, anal beads, interactive male masturbators, teledildonic devices, strokers, sleeves, and erection rings (to name just a few), and they come in all shapes and sizes and colors enough to make your head swirl!

Honestly, it’s a blast – and it’s not just women who are getting in on the action. Sales of sex toys for men have literally exploded through the roof.

Flesh lights may have been all the rage a few years back but now there’s so many new designs being made that it’s hard to keep up.

But first let’s back up a bit and look at what a monster the sex toy market has become.

Sex toys by numbers

Back in 2017 the global market for sex toys was estimated to be valued at $23.7B. By 2019 this had climbed to $26.6B and is expected to continue to grow at a compound growth rate of 9.56% a year from 2020 to 2027. That puts future projections (at an annual growth rate of 9.6%) at $56.58B by 2027.

Interestingly enough the EU market is the largest consumer of sex toys, outperforming even the US in sales.

Germany, Italy, France, the UK, Denmark, and Belgium, are the leading contributors to the market with traditional vibrators and dildos being the most popular products.

Sex toy brands, such as LoveHoney, LELO, Kiiroo, Fun Factory, and We-Vibe have experienced over 35% year-on-year growth, increasing their net value by over 100 fold in just a few years.

As expected, female sex toys sales are the top selling products, and single women are among the leading contributors to the market.

Changing attitudes towards sex toys

But what’s the reason for this sudden explosion of growth? Well, let’s get the most obvious thing out of the way first! Global lockdowns, self-isolation, and the resulting need for sexual release has been a driving factor. People have more time to try out new things and the devil makes work for idle hands. Plus, it’s a safe and clean way to have fun and look after your sexual health.

It may also come as no surprise that products such as personal massagers, vibrators, fleshlights, blindfolds, handcuffs, kegel balls, and bondage items have been among the top selling products. I blame this one on 50 Shades of Grey.

There’s also a trend towards reducing social stigma surrounding sex toys. This social acceptance and a more liberal lifestyle has led to more sales in developed countries.

We’re also seeing more adult stores pop up, and even more purchases from online shops like Shop FeelXVideos.

So greater demand, more availability, and changing attitudes have been the driving force behind it.

Perhaps people also feel more empowered to try out new sexual experiences and social media and cultural shifts have helped to spread the word.

What’s driving the sex toy market?

It may not be what you expect. While single women drive the most sales, the market really is about couples.

Lots of the innovation we are starting to see is geared towards remote lovers. So you’ll be seeing toys that can sync remotely and respond to your partner’s touch, which is a pretty neat way to do things.

With many more people shopping online, ecommerce has been dominating the market with a whopping 63.5% revenue share, with opportunities for discounted rates and discreet shipping.

While sex toys have been used for decades, new innovation and tech have been the leading factors in recent years.

But it’s not all fun and games.

Developing countries are getting a rough deal with a lack of regulation being partly responsible for the use of raw material with harmful chemicals, false labelling, and the lack of a free market economy is harming sales. Hopefully things will start to improve soon.

What will the sex toys of the future look like?

We’ll continue to see innovation in sex technology and the use of high-quality materials. Say goodbye to hard plastic and hello to jelly, rubber, PVC, vinyl, silicone, stainless steel, borosilicate glass, and lucite – all of which are now being used to manufacture next-gen sex toys.

New-gen sex toys are stylish and high-tech, with sleek curves and a sophisticated design language. They’re cute, pocket-sized, gender inclusive, powered by apps, flexible, with dual stimulation options, and real-feel sleeves. Look out for motion sensitive products that respond to your every move and give you an experience just like the real thing.

We’ll also continue to see sustainable products, a focus on safety and cool product launches which break new ground. Some really exciting developments include adult novelty devices using blockchain technology, allowing for remote interaction and feeling your lover in real time.

On the tech side you’ll also be seeing rechargeable, noiseless, compact, and portable vibrators for both men and women.

Countries in the Asia Pacific will ramp up the sex toy market and China and Australia will continue to be the leading revenue generators for the market. Some sources have India set to experience the fastest growth with online retailers catering for increased demand.
